Rango's Creation

Gore Verbinski made a discovery while doing Paramount's first animated feature since Mr. Bug Goes to Town:

... "It's not easy at all! We wrote the first scene with Rango in the terrarium 30 times," he says. For inspiration, the team watched a constant loop of John Ford, Sam Peckinpah and Japanese film Howl's Moving Castle. For reference (and later homage material), the writers took their guidance from Bob Hope's Son of Paleface, Don Knotts' The Shakiest Gun in the West and Sergio Leone's spaghetti Westerns with Clint Eastwood. ...

I think it's admirable that Mr. Verbinski devoted his full attention to Rango and didn't go off and direct a live-action feature while his animated baby was in production. Because animated features deserve to be treated as full-time jobs.

And I think it's telling that the original team won't be making a sequel to the picture. Back to live action!

Rango has already won two "Best" awards, been nominated for others, and has to be considered a top contender for "Best Animated Feature" from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

"...Paramount's first animated feature since Mr. Bug Goes to Town..."

...except for (at least) Charlotte's Web, Beavis and Butt-head Do America, Jimmy Neutron, Rugrats, Thornberrys, Barnyard, Hey Arnold!...

And all of those made money. Except for rango.

And all of those were original ideas - oops!

hmmm... I thought it was:

'We smoked a lot of weed, thought about the story for five minutes, then gave up and decided to remake Chinatown.'

Rango is what happens when you leave a bunch of crazy people who've never made an animated movie before alone and let them go wild.

And that's why Rango is the best animated movie of the year. No one ever told them "no."

yeah... those first 5 minutes actually were the least sleep-inducing moments in the movie. But it seems way ahead in the race for the Academy Award after all the prices it has already won :-/

You should really rewatch Chinatown. Talk about someone who can't follow story.

Gore Verbinski made a hot mess of a film that could have been titled "Cleveland Steamer goes to the West"

Howl's moving Castle and Shakiest Gun in the West? really? Why not just rub your eyes real hard and see what colors you see and make that the story and art direction for your film?

Cocaine is a hell of a drug.

You know a movie's great when there are people out there that absolutely hate it. A truly great film can't please everybody.
